19-year-old Zara Rutherford has landed back in Belgium, snagging the title of youngest woman to fly around the world solo on Thursday.

Rutherford touched down at Wevelgem's Kortrijk-Wevelgem International Airport a world record breaker, as a crowd gathered to watch her plane land.

The British-Belgian also wrapped herself in her respective country's flags, before commenting she was: "just so happy to see them (her family) again."

Rutherford's trip took her over 51,000 km (32,000 miles), across five continents and over 50 nations, since she took off in August.

As her father, Sam Rotherford commented, part of Rutherford's mission statement and motivation for conducting the trip was about: "encouraging young women to consider careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) and aviation."

The youngest woman to fly solo around the world previously was 30-year-old American Shaesta Waiz.
