USA: 'Nord Stream 2 has potential to be source of leverage' - State Dept spox

The US government has said that the Nordstream 2 gas pipeline could be used as leverage against Russia.

“Certainly Nordstream 2 has the potential to be an important source of leverage," announced US Department of State spokesperson Ned Price at a press briefing in Washington DC on Monday, on the topic of the US-Russian discussions.

The Russian-German energy project is currently inoperative and could stay out of service in the event of Russian troops invading Ukraine, the spokesperson said.

With regard to the strategic stability measures mentioned in Switzerland, Price stressed that NATO's "open door" policy was not up for discussion and that the United States considered it a "non-starter" with regard to Russian security proposals.

"The United States came with several ideas of reciprocal actions that the US and Russia can take that would be in our security interest and would improve strategic stability," Price said.

The stability actions included missile placement and the future of certain missile systems in Europe which follow the lines of the now-defunct Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) between the US and Russia and the discussion about reciprocal limits on the size and scope of military exercises and the improvement of its transparency.

Concerning the deployment of Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) peacekeeping forces in Kazakhstan, the US is calling on troops and law enforcement to 'respect human rights and support a peaceful resolution, and importantly, to depart Kazakhstan when the government of Kazakhstan requests it', according to Price.
