Germany: Gov spox calls dissolution of human rights group Memorial by Russian court 'incomprehensible'
Germany deputy government spokesperson Wolfgang Buchner referred to the dissolution order for the NGO Memorial by the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation as 'incomprehensible,' while Federal Health Ministry spokesperson Andreas Deffner presented a genome sequencing method to combat the Omicron variant in Berlin on Wednesday.
"The decision of the Supreme Court to dissolve the non-governmental organisation Memorial is more than incomprehensible and contradicts international obligations to protect fundamental civil rights, which Russia has also entered into," stated deputy government spokesperson Wolfgang Buchner.
The comments come a day after Russia’s Supreme Court issued an order to dissolve the rights group Memorial International.
Memorial received a notification from the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation on November 11.
According to the document, the Prosecutor General’s Office brought an action against the rights group over alleged violations of Russia’s 'foreign agent' legislation.
Moscow’s City Court ordered on Wednesday the closure of the closely related Memorial Human Rights Centre.
