Supporters of former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili held a mass protest outside Rustavi prison No 12, where the politician is currently being held, on Wednesday, calling for his release.

Protesters were seen holding placards and Georgian national flags, and chanting in support of Saakashvili.

The former president was detained on 1 October. He had previously been placed on the domestic wanted list for the murder of banker Sandro Girgvliani and the beating of MP Valery Gelashvili, for which he was sentenced in absentia to three and six years' imprisonment respectively.

While in jail, Saakashvili went on hunger strike, describing himself as a political prisoner. Supporters of the ex-president collected signatures on a petition addressed to the Georgian president and government demanding the former leader's release.

In Georgia's second round of local elections, held on October 30, candidates from the ruling Georgian Dream party became mayors in 19 of of 20 municipalities.
