Syria: Tensions rise as residents protesting al-Hasakah siege face-off with SDF members

Tensions were on the rise as protesters denouncing the siege of the north-eastern Syrian city of al-Hasakah faced off with armed members of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Wednesday.

Hundreds of residents and tribal sheikhs took to the streets calling on the SDF forces to lift the siege that has been imposed for about two weeks on areas controlled by the Syrian army in the city.

“For the fourteenth day in a row, the siege continues by the Syrian Democratic Forces, with the support of the United States of America occupying this country. People gathered despite the closure of the roads and entry points for the tribesmen. Hundreds of people flocked to the square to express their rejection of the unjust siege they impose on us,” one of the protesters said.

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that the Autonomous Administration's security forces used live ammunition in an attempt to disperse the protesters.

Local reports also claim that the SDF are tightening their siege, by halting the entry of cars, motorcycles, cargo, foodstuffs, and restricting the movement of students from the areas under the control of the Syrian army in Al-Hasakah Governorate.
