Tehran hopes to start joint production of Russia’s Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine “in the near future”, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif stated at a joint press conference with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on Tuesday.

"I am glad to tell you that yesterday Sputnik V vaccine was registered in Iran after it had been approved by the country’s health authorities. We hope that in the nearest future we will be able to buy as well as to start its joint production," said Zarif.

Zarif also commented on the future of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreement, saying that “if the United States lifts the sanctions, then we also will return to fulfil obligations under the agreement."

Russia’s Lavrov in turn expressed hope that US President Joe Biden would return the United States to the JCPOA.

"If it happens, and we hope that we will be able to reach this result, then, of course, the relations between Iran and the Russian Federation will benefit, because they will be removed from illegitimate, illegal one-sided sanctions both from the United States and from a number of other countries," concluded Lavrov.
