UAE: 'It's a bitter pill to swallow' - McGregor on defeat from Poirier in UFC 257
Irish MMA star Conor McGregor commented on his defeat from Dustin Poirier in UFC 257 at a news conference in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. Poirier has won the match with a technical knockout in the second round of the fight.
"Fair play to Dustin, I'm very happy for him, very happy that I've got to compete in these times and comeback to my 11thUFC main event, and that's it. It's hard, you know," said McGregor.
It was the first knockout defeat for McGregor in his career. During this fight, his leg got injured, which decreased his chances of winning the match.
"The leg was compromised and I didn't adjust and that's it. Fair play to Dustin, I'm very happy for him, very happy that I've got to compete in these times and come back to 11th UFC main event," said McGregor.
This is the second time the fighters have faced each other. Six years ago at UFC 178, Mcgregor won against Poirier with a first-round KO.
"The game plan was not to be heavy on my feet and through power shots and box early. The game plan was to kick and wrestle and box. To mix it up and make it mixed martial fight," said Poirier, explaining his winning strategy.
"We compromised his leg and he was in a bad position early. Just from repeated leg-kicks," he added.
The fight took place at Etihad Arena in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, with a limited number of fans due to coronavirus restrictions.
