Italy: 10-year-old girl dies after taking part in TikTok challenge

A young girl died in a Palermo hospital after being discovered unconscious by a family member in her bathroom with her mobile phone on Wednesday due to what is reported as a TikTok challenge.

During an interview given on Friday, Gaetana Lazzaro, Head of paediatric intensive care at Di Cristina hospital Palermo said that the young girl died because, "the brain had suffered too long from lack of oxygen due to the strangulation. So after a few hours of an irreversible coma we came to the conclusion of a cerebral death."

According to press sources, one of her siblings said the girl had been taking part in the 'blackout challenge', where people restrict blood flow to the brain to induce a high. This is reported to be a new trend on the video sharing platform. Italy's data protection agency filed a lawsuit in December against TikTok over a perceived "lack of attention to the protection of minors" on the easy to access app.

The young girl's mother agreed to donate her organs to those in need, Lazzaro explained, "When she was asked if they had the desire to donate organs, the parents of the little girl did not hesitate a moment and gave their approval."

TikTok issued a statement in which it claimed to be assisting the authorities' probe of "incitement to suicide." In the past year there has been multiple "challenges" on TikTok, some of which have caused deaths. A 12-year-old Chilean boy and 15-year-old American girl dying in late 2020 taking part in different challenges.
