USA: Biden unveils COVID strategy plan based on 'science not politics'
US President Joe Biden unveiled his national coronavirus strategy that he said was "based on science not politics," as he spoke from Washington DC on Thursday.
Speaking on his first full day in office, Biden his plan started "with mounting an aggressive, safe, and effective vaccination campaign to meet out goal of administering 100 million shots in our first 100 days in office."
Biden added that "one of our 100 day challenges is asking the American people to mask up for the first hundred days," stressing that mask wearing "had become a partisan issue unfortunately but it's a patriotic act."
The president also explained that the plan involved expanding testing and said a 'health equity task force' would be created to ensure that "equality is at the core of every decision we make."
In a pointed contrast to the previous administration, which was criticised for political interference in its response to the pandemic, Biden emphasised that his government's approach would be led by scientists and health experts.
"We're going to make sure they work free from political interference and that they make decisions strictly based on science and healthcare alone," he said.
