Colombia: Bogota intensive care units overwhelmed by rising COVID numbers

Colombia, Bogota
January 21, 2021 at 13:37 GMT +00:00 · Published

Video filmed on Thursday showed intensive care units (ICUs) of various hospitals in Bogota overwhelmed by the increase in COVID-19 numbers.

Medical institutions warned that the collapse of ICUs in the Colombian capital was putting patient care at risk.

"Red alert means reaching a point of occupation where we are putting patient care at risk, not because of procedures to be carried out but because of a lack of beds," said Yulieth Sabaneta, a doctor at the Nueva el Lago clinic.

Only 122 intensive care beds were reportedly available for COVID patients in critical condition across the capital, out of a total of 2,008, according to the Bogota Health Observatory.

"There is close to 100% occupancy in some clinics. There is a shortage of medicines for sedation mainly, some institutions also lack many supplies, there is also a shortage of staff," said Manuel Rodriguez, medical staff at the private clinic Santa Juliana.

"We have never seen so many people die in an Intensive Care Unit," added Jorge Eliécer Martínez, medical staff at El Tunar Hospital.

Bogota has registered 571,951 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 11,580 related deaths since the start of the pandemic, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
