USA: National Guard checkpoints set up in Washington DC ahead of inauguration
National Guard troops could be seen manning a checkpoint in Washington DC on Saturday amid tight security in the US capital ahead of next week's presidential inauguration.
President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are set to be officially inaugurated on Wednesday, January 20, at the Capitol building in a significantly down-scaled ceremony due to the coronavirus pandemic, with limited crowds and virtual events scheduled to take place.
Security is also being beefed up in the wake of the deadly riots at the US Capitol earlier in January, the number of National Guards present in the city was increased from 15,000 to 20,000 and many bookings for guest accommodation have also been cancelled.
