Italy: PM Conte comments as resignations by two ministers put cabinet at risk
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte pledged to work 'until the last day' to 'reinforce the cohesion' of his government following the resignation of two ministers from his majority coalition, as he spoke to the press in Rome on Wednesday.
The country has entered a political crisis after former premier Matteo Renzi pulled his Italia Viva party’s ministers Teresa Bellanova and Elena Bonetti from the cabinet, leaving the ruling coalition led by Conte without a majority in parliament.
"[I wish] everybody could be working constructively because obviously a crisis would not be understood by the country," Conte said.
Asked if he is willing to resign, Conte replied, "I hope it doesn't come to that, also because these days I have been working to define a proposal of a legislative pact, an end-of-term pact. I believe that we all can gather around a table. If there is a will, if there is a willingness to face each other fairly, constructively, I am convinced that we all can find a sense of a larger cohesion of the majority forces."
