Former French president Valery Giscard d'Estaing died at the age of 94 in the Loir-et-Cher region, in central France, on Wednesday, after suffering from complications linked to COVID-19.

Giscard's foundation, the 'Foundation Valery Giscard d’Estaing' confirmed his passing on Twitter, tweeting: "#VGE died on Wednesday 02/12/20 in his family home in the Loir-et-Cher. His state of health had deteriorated and he died as a result of #COVID19. In accordance with his wishes, his funeral will take place in the strictest family privacy."

Elected at the age of 48, Giscard was France’s leader between 1974 and 1981. Giscard was preceeded by Georges Pompidou and succeeded by Francois Mitterrand.

He was best known as leading French society towards modernisation. Some of the feats during his presidency included the legalisation of abortion and allowing mutual consent as a reason for divorce.

One of the catalysts for France's involvement in the European Monetary System, he built a great relationship with the former West German leader Helmut Schmidt. Together they played a huge role in launching the European single currency, the Euro.

Later in his career, between the years of 1989 and 1993, Giscard served as a member of the European Parliament.
