Germany: Merkel announces extension of partial lockdown until January 10
German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that Germany's partial lockdown measures will be extended until January 10th during a press conference in Berlin on Wednesday.
Chancellor Merkel held the press conference together with Mayor of Berlin Michael Muller and Bavarian Minister-President Markus Soeder.
"If the infection process develops as much as we have seen in the last few days, we will meet again on January 4th. The states will continue their regulations from December 20th until January 10th. This means that in principle the situation will remain as it is at present, except of course for the Christmas rule which would be taken separately until January 10th and then on January 4th we will discuss how to proceed thereafter," stated Merkel.
The topic of vaccines was prevalent throughout the press conference as more positive reports have been released regarding BioNTech and Moderna's COVID-19 vaccines.
"We know from BioNTech and Moderna together that we will probably receive seven million vaccine doses in the first quarter [of the year]. This is now the assumption," confirmed Merkel.
"The older, the greater the risk, i.e. that the older ones are vaccinated first and then the older ones are vaccinated in descending order of age," Chancellor Merkel added.
There have been 1,105,832 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Germany since the outbreak began. Thus far there have been 17,812 coronavirus-related deaths nationwide.
