Germany: Drive-in Christmas market preserves holiday spirit despite pandemic restrictions
The Bavarian town of Unterbrunn has opened up a drive-in Christmas market, allowing festive locals the chance to still enjoy a traditional Christmas market experience despite the lockdown measures put in place to combat the rising number of coronavirus cases in the country, footage from Sunday shows.
Attendees can be seen placing orders and passing through the market while the workers are helping them with their purchases, all while respecting the coronavirus rules.
"The thing is that because of corona we have to avoid that people gather in masses. And with drive in — you just drive through, so it can't happen. You see the conditions, you can really drive in there at the back, and drive through ahead," said Anjuli Wankerl, one of the workers there.
Markus, a local resident who was visiting the market, said “it's a great idea, I find it amazing that one can at least try something, and make the best out of the situation. Corona affects us all, one takes the best or at least makes something out of it. From what is currently allowed in the current situation.”
On Friday, Germany surpassed one million total cases of coronavirus cases, reports say.
