Argentina: Thousands march against abortion rights in Buenos Aires

Argentina, Buenos Aires
November 29, 2020 at 06:45 GMT +00:00 · Published

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Buenos Aires and other cities throughout Argentina, on Saturday, to protest the government's proposed law to legalise abortion.

Crowds of protesters were seen marching through the streets of the capital and gathering outside the Palace of the National Congress.

"I am here because President Alberto Fernandez is totally disconnected from reality. Argentina spent a very difficult year and he spent it talking about taking care of the lives of Argentines," said Santa Fe Provincial Deputy Amalia Granata, who was taking part in the march. "Today a law is entered where the opposite is true, where the lives of Argentines to be born are discarded."

President Alberto Fernandez made a campaign promise to reform the country's restrictive abortion laws, which currently include up to 15 years in prison for inducing an abortion. Earlier this month, he announced a new draft of a law to legalise abortion was sent to congress.

The issue has been at the centre of heated debate in the mostly Catholic country. In 2018, the Chamber of Deputies approved a bill which was voted down by the Senate.

Nearly 40,000 women are hospitalised each year as a result of clandestine abortions according to Human Rights Watch.
