Vatican: Pope Francis appoints first African American cardinal in Catholic history
Archbishop Wilton Gregory was elevated to cardinal at Vatican's St Peter's Basilica on Saturday, becoming the first African American cardinal in the history of the Catholic church.
The ceremony was historic as well for not having all of its soon-to-be cardinals physically present as two were not able to attend due to COVID-19 restrictions, according to reports.
Pope Francis also elevated 12 other cardinals from Rwanda, Brunei, Chile, and the Philippines.
