
India: Authorities impose restrictions as Cyclone Nivar triggers floods in southeast of country
Floodings hit the southern Indian city of Chennai on Wednesday following heavy rainfall, as Cyclone Nivar is barrelling towards the southeastern coast.
Vehicles were seen driving through the flooded streets of the city and boats were beached, as approximately 100,000 people have reportedly been evacuated.
Authorities declared a public holiday and imposed a ban on public gatherings, as thousands of rescue personnel were deployed.
According to local media, Cyclone Nivar has made landfall in the Tamil region carrying winds of between 120 (75 miles per hour) and 145 (90 miles per hour) km per hour.
