
Spain: At least 3 dead after boat with migrants capsizes off Canary Islands
At least three died after a boat carrying dozens of migrants capsized off the coast of Orzola, in the north of Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands, on Tuesday.
Footage shows dramatic scenes in the aftermath of the incident
Survivors, reported to be of North African origin, were seen trying to reach safety by climbing rocks off the coast, amid strong waves.
According to reports, at least three people have died so far after the shipwreck, reportedly carrying 37 migrants, including women and children. Twenty-eight survivors have been rescued so far, as search efforts are still underway.
The survivors will be transported to a camp in the industrial premises of Playa Honda, where they will be tested for COVID-19 and kept isolated for 72 hours.
More than 18,000 people have arrived from North and West Africa to the Canary Islands this year, which is more than 10 times the number of last year.
