Police and protesters clashed when hundreds of protesters ignored a ban on public gatherings to protest against the latest coronavirus lockdown measures in Thessaloniki on Friday.

Demonstrators hurled rocks and paint bombs towards the police, who can be seen responding with tear gas.

Earlier the crowd had been chanting anti-government slogans and accused authorities of treason. Many of them are facing economic problems and unemployment because of the lockdown, which is being implemented to slow the spread of the virus.

As of Friday, Greece has reported 52,254 coronavirus cases and 715 virus-related deaths according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
