Italy: Restaurant workers outraged at new COVID-19 restrictions in Rome

Rome's restaurant workers and locals reacted against new COVID-19 restrictions, which forced bars and restaurants to close at 18.00 local time (17.00 GMT), in Rome, on Monday.

Restaurant workers and owners could be seen packing away tables and closing the doors to their establishments as the curfew kicked off. During the evening a flash mob took place, whereby restaurant workers gathered to chant against the new restrictions and pour beer away on the street.

One local Matteo said, "you turn around and see one of the most important squares in Rome, which should be full and the merchants are closing the blinds."

"Today, if you look at any photo, you see a bus, a subway, or a crowded tram. I don't understand why, the problem is always us," stated Roberto d'Uffici, a restaurant employee.

The government has implemented restrictive measures across various parts of the country in an attempt to curb a rising infection rate.

Italy has registered 542,789 cases of coronavirus with 37,479 deaths related to it, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
