Australia: Several arrested in anti-lockdown protest in Melbourne

Australia, Melbourne

Hundreds of protesters gathered at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne, Friday, to decry the local government and the lockdown restrictions in place in the state of Victoria since August.

Police made 16 arrests and issued 61 penalty notices for offences, including not wearing a mask, breaching lockdown rules and assaulting officers.

"The suicide rate is higher than COVID deaths and (Premier of Victoria) Daniel Andrews keeps thinking he's doing the right thing locking us in our homes, people are scared to leave, you walk the street without mask they yell at you, it's dividing everyone, it's not a good place to live in," a protester said.

Tough Covid restrictions in metropolitan Melbourne are gradually being relaxed. On October 19, the 5am-9pm curfew has been lifted and people can now travel within 25km from their homes instead of the previous 5km, but indoor gatherings and non-essential travel are still not permitted.

Premier Andrews called the protest "selfish" and said on Friday that Victoria had just one coronavirus case in the last 24h, after having recorded 725 new daily cases "just a few months back."
