Switzerland: UN envoy calls for opening humanitarian corridors, release of detainees in Libya

United Nations, Geneva
October 19, 2020 at 15:49 GMT +00:00 · Published

Acting head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Stephanie Williams, called on the joint committees participating in the Libyan Military Committee talks in Geneva to discuss “confidence-building measure” in order to open the crossings for humanitarian aid and prisoners swap in Libya.

In her opening speech of the 4th round of talks on Monday, Williams expressed hope to reach a solution that would guarantee “a complete and sustainable ceasefire” across Libya.

“The eyes and hearts of Libyan people across the nation are looking forward to seeing the outcomes of this round and what can be done during these few days to reduce their suffering and expel the ghost of war from the entire Libyan soil, while not allowing and foreign interference that might prolong the conflict”, Williams explained.

The round of talks in Geneva is marked by in-person meetings between the delegations of the two parties to the conflict in Libya, made up of five high-ranking officers from each side, compromising of the military leadership of the Tripoli and Benghazi/Tobruk based powers.

Libyan National Army (LNA) forces, led by Field Marshall Khalifa Haftar, are based in Benghazi, with the parliament in Tobruk, and the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA), led by Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj, is based in Tripoli.

Libya has been torn by conflict since the ousting of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
