An Indian artist in Bengaluru has been creating stunning portraits on his typewriter, as could be seen on Tuesday.

According to former banker AC Gurumurthy, he wanted to create something "novel" and "new" when he conceived of the idea of using a typewriter to create works of art. The artist said his breakthrough came in 1968, when US Senator Robert Kennedy was assassinated and he decided to create a portrait using a typewriter, after which his work was published in several newspapers.

He explained, "that was my great breakthrough in my life and from that day onwards I started regularly making attempts on typewriters and I made 250 to 300 drawings so far."

"I am going for a Guinness world record very shortly, " added Gurumurthy, although it is unclear what specific record he is aiming for.

His work includes drawings of world figures including Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa and Nelson Mandela, as well as renowned actors Bruce Lee and Charlie Chaplin.

Gurumurthy has professional typewriter training from his time in finance and can type up to 90 letters per minute. Now he uses his talent to pursue his passion for art, and can create a portrait in around three hours.

The process begins with an initial sketch of his subject, and then he feeds the paper into the typewriter and types the portrait out. He explained the intricate shading of the subject is produced through by varying the pressure he applies on the keyboard as well as by leaving blank spaces.
