Armenia: Baku 'declared war' on Yerevan – PM Pashinyan

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan shared his view on Nagorno-Karabakh tensions, speaking via video link from Yerevan for the "60 minutes" TV show aired on Tuesday evening.

Reminding about the Ottoman Empire genocide of Armenian people, Pashinyan claimed it had something in common with the ongoing events, “We all perceive this as an existential threat to our people, in fact, we perceive it as a war that was declared on the Armenian people, and our people just have no chance but to use the right of self-defence."

The Armenian leader also commented on the alleged Tukey's part in the conflict. "Turkey, according to our information, is looking for a reason for wider involvement in this conflict, according to our information, it is looking for a reason to bring its troops to Nakhichevan, it is an Azerbaijani enclave bordering Turkey, Armenia, and Iran. Although we have information that some units of the Turkish army are already present there," he said, although the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev denied Turkey was a side in the conflict.

Pashinyan called for Azerbaijan to resort to "compromise" and "to stop the aggression."

Fighting in the disputed region broke out on Sunday when Azeri and ethnic Armenian soldiers exchanged fire. It's been the heaviest clashes in the region since 2016 with dozens of casualties reported. Both sides blame each other for the escalation.

The Nagorno-Karabakh region is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan but has an independent government led by a majority group of ethnic Armenians.
