Mexico: Lopez Obrador apologises to families of missing students from Ayotzinapa, announces arrests

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador apologised to the families of the 43 ‘normalista’ students of Ayotzinapa who disappeared, on behalf of the Mexican State during a press conference in Mexico City on Saturday.

In addition, the president promised "justice" and announced that arrests had been authorised against public officials including the former director of the Criminal Investigation Agency, Tomas Zeron de Lucio, adding that there would be "zero impunity" for those involved.

The families of the missing students attended the press conference, where their representative Maria Martinez Zeferino spoke. She is the mother of Miguel Angel Hernandez Martinez, one of the students.

Zeferino thanked the president for his "availability" and added that he is "more humane than the previous ones," although she also asked him to "press" more so that the investigation would move forward faster. "It is not possible that the criminals are more powerful than you, Mr. President," she added.

Finally, the family members handed over some clothes with messages to the president and the officials who were present at the press conference. "It's not a gift, they are messages so that when you see them you remember [that] even in our house, and when you get to yours, you remember that we are missing our 43 and thousands more," Martinez explained.

Forty-three students, who were training to be teachers at the College of Ayotzinapa, went missing on September 26, 2014 after being detained by police in Iguala, a town in the state of Guerrero. An independent investigation released in December 2014, stated that the Federal Police were involved in the disappearances, handing the students over to local gang members. The allegations of political and police corruption have led to mass protests throughout the country.
