Salvadoran cat lovers save hundreds of abandoned cats by turning their home into a shelter

El Salvador, Santa Ana

When she was just eight years old, Tania Tochez, from El Salvador, began to develop a particular interest and love for cats, a feeling that grew stronger as she became an adult, prompting her and her twin sister to create a shelter in their Santa Ana home, where they took in more than 100 cats.

Footage from Thursday shows Tania taking care of, feeding and talking to dozens of cats, as she records their diets and estimated ages in an improvised register.

"With my twin sister we both started rescuing kittens when we were eight years old, we fell in love with the kittens even more as we saw how people ignored them or preferred canines," she said.

The love for cats led Tania to study to become a veterinarian to better serve her guests, which she says is not a permanent shelter but a place where cats can wait until they are adopted.

Tania and her sister decided to create the "Hogar Felino de El Salvador" (Feline Home of El Salvador), a non-profit foundation where they receive all kinds of contributions from those who seek to help them take care of animals that have been abandoned.
