Belarus: Country among few where 'colour revolution failed' - Lukashenko

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said that the country appeared to be one of the few, where the colour revolution had failed to succeed.

"Our statehood was unprecedentedly challenged - it was a challenge coming from repeatedly tried and tested failure-proof technologies of independent states’ disruption. But we are among a few - maybe even the only ones - where the colour revolution failed. And this is a choice of Belarusians who do not want to lose the country in no case," he explained during his inauguration ceremony in Minsk on Wednesday.

Lukashenko underlined that he cannot leave Belarusians who connected their life, future and destiny with the state course.

"To be honest, I saw people in action, understood that not only I but our nation is surrounded by patriots," continued Lukashenko.

He praised the work and the firmness of civil servants, men in uniform, workers from the village and all those, who retained common sense in the face of "disorientation of society."

"We are working on a new Constitution. We have to create conditions for the development of true, I underline this - true party system, update our election legislation, work on the issues of local governance reform, what is already being done," he underlined.

During his concluding remarks, Lukashenko addressed the audience saying: "I will make everything so that you do not regret that I was the first President of our country."

Belarus has been rocked by a major political crisis following the re-election of Lukashenko as head of state in August, an outcome which sparked mass protests across the country and concerns over human rights abuse from the UN, the EU and various other organisations.

The leader of the Belarusian opposition Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, as well as the authorities of Germany, Slovakia, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, refused to recognise President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko as the head of the republic. Tikhanovskaya had won a little more than 10 percent of the vote and came second in the presidential elections.

The Kremlin preferred not to comment on the inauguration ceremony, although Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed Lukashenko as the legitimate leader of Belarus.

According to official figures, more than 6,700 people have been detained in Belarus since the beginning of the protests.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the republic reports about hundreds of victims, including about 130 law enforcement officers. The deaths of three protesters have been officially confirmed.
