Belarus: Riot police use water cannons against protesters during rally in Minsk

Belarus, Minsk

Police in riot gear charged at protesters and used water cannons to disperse crowds gathered in the centre of Minsk, on Wednesday, demonstrating against Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko as he was inaugurated for his sixth term.

The protesters gathered on Independence Square, and marched towards Minsk Hero City Obelisk, chanting "Long Live Belarus ".

A secret ceremony of Alexander Lukashenko's inauguration took place earlier in Minsk, during which the he said that the country "was among the very few - maybe even the only - where the "Colour revolution did not take place".

Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya said she was the "only leader elected by the Belarusian people," adding that European nations "support the Belarusian people in demanding to stop the violence, release political prisoners and hold new, fair, and transparent elections."

According to the disputed official results in last month's election, Tikhanovskaya won 10 percent of the vote, and Lukashenko received more than 80 percent of the ballots.

The country has been swept by anti-government protests since the August 9 vote. Many Western countries have refused to accept the outcome and raised concerns over human rights abuse in the following unrest, while Russia has recognised Lukashenko legitimacy.
