UN: 'Gender inequality' is 'greatest single challenge to human rights' globally - Guterres at UNGA 75

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that "gender inequality" was the "greatest single challenge to human rights around the world," as he addressed the 75th session of the UN General Assembly in New York City on Monday.

Guterres was speaking at an event marking the UN's 75th anniversary, and he referenced the painful birth of the UN in his remarks.

"The organisation we celebrate today emerged only after immense suffering it took two world wars, millions of deaths and the horrors of the Holocaust for world leaders to commit to international cooperation and the rule of law," said Guterres.

"Never in modern history have we gone so many years without military confrontation between the major powers. This is a major achievement of which member states can be proud and which we must all strive to preserve," he stressed.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, one representative from each of the 193 UN members was allowed to attend the ceremony.

All the other attendees were set to appear via videoconference, with world leaders sending pre-recorded video statements.
