UN: World needs unity to overcome global challenges, Lavrov says in UNGA address

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the world needs to come together to solve global issues, addressing the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) from Moscow on Monday, as the world body convenes virtually this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

In his speech, Lavrov paid tribute to the representatives of 50 countries who met in San Francisco in 1945 to draw up the UN Charter.

“They came together to protect future generations from war, to affirm faith in human rights, to create conditions for just world order and social progress. Years later some tend to take this great achievement for granted,” said the Russian diplomat.

He criticised what he called “attempts to rethink history, to denigrate the role of the nations who made a significant contribution to the victory over fascism”.

The minister also drew attention to the current challenges that threaten global stability, including military conflicts, international terrorism, climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It is becoming more and more difficult to react to those and other global problems every year, especially in the climate of growing disunity among global society,” he stated, adding that “The world is tired of division lines, division of states to friends and foes. The world demands the build-up of comprehensive mutual aid and cooperation."

"The destiny of the UN is in the hands of its member states. We have to one more time, as it was in 1945, get rid of differences and unite to solve common tasks on the basis of peer-to-peer dialogue and mutual respect of interests. The UN platform provides all necessary conditions for this," concluded Lavrov.
