Belgium: European Parliament votes to adopt resolution against Russia over Navalny case

The European parliament voted, with a massive majority, to adopt a joint motion for a resolution on the situation in Russia regarding the case of alleged poisoning against Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. 688 MEPs [Members of the European Parliament] voted on the matter in Brussels on Thursday, with the result being 532 MEPs voting in favour of the resolution, only 84 against, with 72 abstaining.

The resolution, named RC-9-2020-0280 lists multiple accusations that will require response from Russian officials.

"The attempted assassination of Alexei Navalny took place in the run-up to Russia's local and regional elections on 13 September 2020, where he and his team had been actively engaged in introducing a 'smart voting' strategy to defeat the candidates of the Putin regime; whereas this casts a particularly worrying light on the state of democracy, fundamental freedoms and human rights in the country," reads the resolution published by the European Parliament on their official website.

The resolution "strongly condemns the attempted assassination of Alexei Navalny and expresses its utmost concern about the repeated use of chemical nerve agents against Russian citizens," the resolution goes on to state.

Navalny has been in hospital in Berlin after arriving aboard a medical plane on August 22. He infamously fell ill during a flight from Tomsk to Moscow on August 20. The original plane had been forced to make an emergency landing in Omsk where Navalny was rushed to hospital. The hospital in Omsk where Navalny was initially treated had dismissed the possibility of poisoning.

On Monday, Navalny was removed from a ventilator and was able to leave his bed for short periods of time, according to hospital officials.

Navalny has also announced his decision to come back to Russia as soon as he recovers. The activist's decision was reported by the New York Times citing a senior German security official, which was later confirmed by his press secretary Kira Yarmish.
