Belarus: Lukashenko asked Putin for 'certain types of weapons'

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said he asked his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin for 'certain types of weapons', speaking at a bilateral meeting with Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu in Minsk, on Wednesday.

"I also asked the Russian president for certain types of weapons. I told him that we will see what we really need to strengthen in terms of the Union State when you arrive. There's nothing to be afraid of, either. We are ready to go on. And recent events show that we need to go on bravely and protect the interests of both Belarusians and Russians," he claimed.

The Belarusian leader stressed that he is able to "maintain the situation not only in Belarus, but also along our borders", adding that the recent events only made two countries "more united".

"You can be sure of our reliability in defending the territory from Brest to Vladivostok. And recent events make us even more united, so all those people who intended to drive a wedge between us [between Russia and Belarus] failed," Lukashenko said.

When addressing the press, the Russian defence minister noted that both countries have planned some 130 joint events, but "only 30 percent of the planned programme" were completed.

"Unfortunately, we have completed only 30 percent of the planned programme. We need to reach at least 70 percent of the plan by the end of this year. Of course, to do this we need to consolidate and conduct the second stage of the drills that are currently going on," Shoigu said.

The annual military exercise started between the countries in the Brest region on September 14. Around 300 Russian troops and 70 units of combat and special equipment take part in the Slavic Brotherhood 2020 drills that run until September 25 at the Brest firing range.
