UAE: Dubai Jewish cuisine restaurant reports higher demand amid Israel deal
The first Jewish kitchen in Dubai has seen demand skyrocket following the peace deal brokered between Israel and UAE on August 13.
Kitchen owner and founder, Elli Kriel, revealed in Dubai on Wednesday that she officially launched Elli’s Kosher Kitchen in 2019, after cooking food for rabbis who were attending an interfaith conference.
"In November 2018, we had a number of rabbis come in for an interfaith conference in Abu Dhabi and my husband came to ask me if I could cook for them, because the conference organisers had nothing to give them to eat. So I agreed to do that and I sent them food and after that the requests became very frequent."
Since the peace deal was brokered by the nations, Kriel has noticed a "big difference" in demand.
"Before the peace agreement it was mainly individuals, the businessmen coming through, maybe one or two people at a time, maybe four people at a time."
"After the peace treaty, well of course Israelis are able to come here now, so it's a completely new market. And the Israelis coming here are interested in tourism and of course business. But on the tourism side, we are now getting requests for big tour groups, so 20 people, 40 people, 60 people, 300 people, 500 people. So there's a big demand, a new demand that's happening," she added.
Kriel believes that many Emiratis who discovered Jewish food in New York and "other European cities" were excited to have to have Jewish cuisine in Dubai.
"They order from me quite regularly. I have a good Emirati following," she said.
The first official direct commercial flight between Israel and UAE landed on Monday.
The Israel-UAE treaty is set to establish diplomatic ties between the two countries, and has triggered a severe backlash in parts of the Arab world, including Pakistan and Iran.
