Tensions between Turkey and Greece over the exploration of energy reserves in the eastern Mediterranean escalated on Thursday after France sent jets to the area and the Greek government placed its military forces on high alert.

Istanbul resident reacted to the developments, largely supporting Ankara's official stance on the dispute.

"I am surprised by the fact that Greece is claiming right to our waters in the Mediterranean Sea. I am also surprised that Egypt, a country that is supposed to be friendly to us agreeing with Greece. The waters are our natural right and I believe we will defend our right as a country," said Emre Tekin, an Istanbul resident.

"This is our sea. In the past they [Greece] were supposed to give back the Dodecanese Islands to Turkey but they did not. Therefore, it's normal that Turkey is drilling in the Mediterranean and it should. And Greece can object to that all it wants. We are with our government," said Ali Aybas. another Istanbul resident.

Greece recently signed a maritime delimitation agreement with Egypt, significantly overlapping with Turkey's continental shelf claims that were previously ratified with Libya.

The Oruc Reis seismic research vessel, which last month conducted seismographic surveys near Kastellorizo, is reportedly carrying out additional surveys in the waters of Greece's continental shelf claims and the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus.

Turkey has long fought for the international recognition of what it considers its maritime boundaries in the Eastern Mediterranean, and has repeatedly contested oil and gas exploration efforts and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) delineations by Cyprus. Ankara argued that the agreements violate both Turkey's and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus's (TRNC) sovereign rights.

Athens considers the Turkish research a violation of to the international law.
