Lithuania: Vilnius residents hold solidarity event outside Belarusian embassy

Lithuania, Vilnius
August 14, 2020 at 00:10 GMT -00:00 · Published

Demonstrators gathered outside of the Belarusian embassy in Vilnius on Thursday, in a show of support for opposition protests across the border following the results of Belarus' presidential election.

Dozens of Vilnius residents can be seen holding posters reading, “Free Belarus”, “Lukashenko go away” in English, and “Long live Belarus” in Belarusian. Some were seen holding Belarusian flags.

Earlier on Thursday, head of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, Linas Linkevicius, stated that Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who left Minsk for Lithuania after the election, needs some time to decide what she is going to do next.

Mass protests against Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko have been taking place across the country since Sunday. The Interior Ministry has confirmed that around 6,700 people have been detained during the unrest, and at least one protester has died.

Lukashenko, who has been in power in Belarus since 1994, won the August 9 election with more than 80 percent of the ballots, according to the country’s Central Election Commission. His closest opponent Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the wife of jailed Belarusian opposition figure and blogger Sergei Tikhanovsky, received just over 10 percent of the vote. She has since left the country for Lithuania.
