Belarus: Workers of major manufacturers show support for protesters amid post-election unrest

Belarus, Zhodino

Dozens of employees of two Belarusian industrial giants BelAZ and Minsk Automobile Plant (MAZ) rallied on Thursday in support of protests over the results of the country’s presidential election.

BelAZ workers in the town of Zhodino gathered outside their plant, demanding to speak to the company's authorities, and also asking for the withdrawal of riot police from the town and calling for fair elections.

Management at BelAZ downplayed the event, saying it was merely a meeting between them and the workers.

In the capital Minsk, MAZ factory workers rallied in support of the anti-government demonstrators, calling for authorities to end the violent crackdown on protesters.

The mass protests started on Sunday after election officials announced that incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko had won more than 80 percent of the vote.

Two people have lost their lives in the turmoil and at least 6,000 have been detained throughout the country since the election.
