Germany: Berlin slams Belarus for 'wave of repression' in face of election protests

A German government spokesperson criticised the Belarusian government for implementing a "wave of repression" in response to ongoing protests sparked by the results of the recent presidential election, in Berlin, on Wednesday.

"The federal government condemns every use of force against peacefully demonstrating people on the streets of Minsk and elsewhere in Belarus," said spokesman Steffen Seibert, adding that there had been "thousands of arrests."

"Everyone being arrested in Belarus because they peacefully demonstrated for their democratic rights, has to be released and listened to," stressed Seibert.

The topics of Greek-Turkish rising tensions in the eastern Mediterranean Sea was also discussed with Seibert urging Greece and Turkey to engage in "direct dialogue about those dividing questions of maritime law.''

Health Ministry spokesperson Hanno Kautz discussed the recently announced Russian coronavirus vaccine saying that as far as the ministry was concerned it "was not tested enough and we don't have the data."

Kautz emphasised that "it could be dangerous to start too early with the use of this vaccine.''

On Tuesday Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that a COVID-19 vaccine developed by Russia's Gamaleya Research Institute has been approved for use in the country, saying that it had passed necessary trials, with Health Minister Mikhail Murashko stating that it had shown "high effectiveness and safety".
