Belarusian opposition leader and presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who has claimed victory over incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko in Sunday's election, published a video message on Tuesday after fleeing her country for Lithuania.

"You know, I thought that this whole election campaign toughened me and gave me so much strength that I could withstand everything," she said in the video message, which was published after Lithuania’s foreign minister confirmed she is "safe" now in the Baltic state.

"But I probably remained the weak woman I was at the beginning," the presidential candidate added.

She stated that the decision to leave Belarus was difficult, but she took it “absolutely on her own”.

“Not one life is worth what is happening right now. Children are the most important thing in our lives”, she concluded.

According to the Belarus Central Election Commission (CEC), Tikhanovskaya, the wife of Belarusian opposition figure and blogger Sergei Tikhanovsky, won 10.09 percent of the vote in Sunday’s election.

Incumbent leader Lukashenko, who has been in power in Belarus since 1994, won the election with more than 80 percent of the ballots, according to the CEC.
