The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) began rescue operations in Beirut, on Thursday. Doctors, emergency workers and rescue dogs were looking for survivors among rubbles in the aftermath of the deadly blasts that destroyed the Lebanese capital’s port.

Rescuers are working on a triple-shift basis, with teams of 20 members. According to the information provided by EMERCOM, three bodies were found during the operation.

Moreover, rescue efforts continue in the airmobile hospital of the Russian EMERCOM deployed in Beirut close to the scene, with first injured patients being treated. Authorities of Lebanon, including the Minister of Health, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports and Director of Lebanese Civil Defence were able to pay a visit to the facility.

The blasts, which took the lives of 149 people and injured more than 5,000, are thought to have been caused by the still unexplained ignition of 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive chemical material which was reportedly stored without precautionary measures at the port, according to Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab.

The Lebanese government has declared a two-week state of emergency.
