Australia: Melbourne residents react to new stage four restrictions

Australia, Melbourne

Melbourne shoppers reacted to the announcement of new stage four COVID-19 restrictions in the Australian city's metro area on Monday.

Some supermarket shelves were seen to be empty, amid reports of supply chains being affected due to outbreaks in abattoirs that supply meat to major supermarkets. Supermarkets have again introduced limits on items including meats, toilet paper, rice and hand sanitiser.

"We were nearly there in eradicating coronavirus, COVID-19, and I think that it's tremendously sad that the community didn't get so strongly behind the restrictions," said shopper Kate, speaking outside an ALDI supermarket in the Melbourne suburb of Ferntree Gully.

Stage four restrictions have been initiated across metropolitan Melbourne from Sunday for six weeks.

Under the restrictions, people are only allowed to leave their house for four reasons: purchasing food and essential items, care and care-giving, daily exercise, and work. Melbourne residents will also have to face a curfew from 8pm to 5am.

"If it doesn't work we may have to look at the Sweden model, like herd immunity," said shopper Barbara, speaking outside a Woolworths supermarket in the suburb of Scoresby. "That sounds cruel but I don't know if that may work. So when all this is over, we'll have to just have a good look at what works and what does not work."

On Monday, Victoria recorded 429 new cases of coronavirus and 13 deaths.

Since the start of the outbreak, Victoria has had 11,937 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 136 related deaths as of Monday, according to Johns Hopkins University.
