Bangladesh, Munshiganj district

Around 4.7 million people were affected by floods in Bangladesh after almost a month of torrential rains submerged around a quarter of the country’s landmass.

People could be seen walking through flood waters and stranded in their homes in the district of Munshiganj on Thursday.

At least 100 have died since the monsoon started in the end of June and thousands have fallen victim to water-borne diseases, according to local reports. Almost a million homes were hit by the floods so far, forcing more than 50,000 to take refuge in temporary shelters.

The floods come as Bangladesh deals with a surge in COVID-19 cases and after many are still reeling from the destruction left by Cyclone Amphan in May.
