State of Palestine: Gaza football championship for children amputees draws to close

Palestinian Territory, Occupied, Gaza City

An amputee football championship for children concluded under the slogan, "We are the heroes," in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday.

The tournament ended on the ground in the Yarmouk stadium in the centre of Gaza City, with the participation of 28 male and female amputees, the majority of whom lost the use of a lower limb due to alleged Israeli attacks. The tournament was sponsored by the International Committee of the Red Cross, and was held in partnership with the 'Palestine Football Association for Amputated People.'

Ignacio Casares, director of the International Committee of the Red Cross office in Gaza, revealed the aim of the tournament was to "bring the victims back to normal, to a normal life, to as large a possible extent."

One of the children participating, Thaer Joda, said, "I was injured in the war of 2014 when I was sitting with my family, and an Israeli drone targeted us. Five of my family members were martyred, I survived."

"My favourite player is Cristiano Ronaldo. My dream is to meet him and have his playing skills," he added.

Wea’am Mohammed Al-Astal, one of the players, expressed her passion, saying, "our message to the world is that despite our amputation, we are able to represent Palestine."
