USA: White House says authorities have 'lost control' of Portland amid clashes

United States, Washington DC
July 21, 2020 at 22:54 GMT -00:00 · Published

White House spokesperson Kayleigh McEnany defended the use of Federal force during protests in Portland as she spoke to the media in Washington on Tuesday.

McEnany stressed the Federal Protective Service officers were deployed without consent of the Oregon state government "to safeguard federal property" adding "The bottom line is that this president stands with law and order, which leads to peace. And we will not allow Portland to become the new CHOP [Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone] like what we saw in Seattle."

Answering further questions on the legitimacy of the move, the spokesperson stated, "When a federal courthouse is being lit on fire, commercial fireworks being shot at it, being shot at the officers. I think that that falls pretty well within the limits of 40 US Code 1315."

On Friday, Federal agents used tear gas and fired less-lethal ammunition at protesters in Portland, with Oregon Governor Kate Brown severely condemning the actions of the federal government. The clashes erupted after protesters gathered to decry police brutality.

Federal officers were deployed in Portland under the Trump administration's new executive order to protect federal monuments and buildings.

McEnany also commented on the incident where Mark and Patricia McCloskey pointed guns at protesters who marched past their mansions. The press secretary defended the elderly couple's right to defend their property and slammed the decision of St. Louis top prosecutor Kim Gardner to call the McCloskey to the court as an "extreme abuse of power."
