Armenia: Yerevan sees no ‘need to appeal’ to CSTO amid conflict with Azerbaijan

A representative of Armenia’s Defence Ministry, Artsrun Hovhannisyan, said in Ijevan on Wednesday, that Yerevan is not planning on appealing to the Russia-led military alliance, Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), amid the conflict on the country’s border with Azerbaijan.

"The armed forces of the Armenian Republic are fully capable of realising its tasks. The degree of conflict, its scope at the moment does not reach the point, where the Armenian Republic sees the need to appeal to the CSTO to participate in any actions. The Armenian Republic and its armed forces clearly have their own perform tasks," Hovhannisyan said.

The representative also reported that during the days of the conflict, Armenian troops shot down about 10 enemy UAVs, including an Israeli-made Hermes 900 reconnaissance drone.

«As for the Hermes 900 drone, that was shot down yesterday, yes, we confirm it. Hermes 900, as I noted, is an expensive, high-tech drone. Yesterday, one of the famous Israeli bloggers noted that this is a flying think tank that was shot down by Armenian units, by the OSA-AK complex” Hovhannisyan added.

The news of fighting between the Tavush province of Armenia and Azerbaijan’s Tovuz district broke out on Sunday afternoon. Both Baku and Yerevan accuse each other of shelling civilian areas on the border.

According to Armenia's Defence Ministry, none of its soldiers have been killed in the clashes, though Baku has said that both sides suffered losses.

Azerbaijani Defence Ministry reported that seven of its soldiers, including a general, have been killed since Sunday.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov said on Tuesday that Moscow was "deeply worried" about the escalation of tension and called for restraint.

The two countries have been embroiled for decades in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, a disputed region which currently lies within the borders of Azerbaijan and is run by ethnic Armenians.
