The emblematic 1939 Packard Super Eight Derham Phaeton, specifically the Special Argentine government edition, famous for being used by Juan and Evita Peron throughout their time in office, will go under the hammer at Mecum Auctions in Indianapolis, Indiana next Saturday.

"It's one of only three 1939 Packards that were built with custom coachwork for government use. This particular car actually went to Argentina in the late 1930s and was used up until the 1950s as a car used for special events and parades. Evita Peron is well known and documented to have spent a lot of time in this car and it has been reported that its one of her most favourite cars that she was ever involved with. It was actually found in Argentina in the 1970s, brought to the United States, documented and restored back to as new, very authentic condition," explained Mecum Auction's director of company relations John Kraman.

Though the car had been used by multiple Argentine governments, the most famous leader to use this Packard was Juan Peron, who took the office of president in 1946. Peron and his wife Eva (better known as Evita) were both loved and hated in a roller-coaster presidency and era in Argentine history.

This specific car is allegedly Evita's favourite car, many resounding vintage images and film of the time show her in the Phaeton. The vintage car was rediscovered in the early 1970s, lost in a small enclosure at an Argentine pig farm.

"It was such an important historical car, in wonderful condition. It's actually going to appeal to an international market. We're primarily a company that deals in American cars, selling to the US audience, but I think this car, because of the history and the background, is gonna branch out a little bit," said Kraman.

The car will be going under the hammer on July 18th for a staggering amount of money. "The pre-auction estimate on the 1939 Packard is in the $200,000 range (€177,069, £158,440), which really, actually, for an investment grade high-end collectible represents really good value. We believe that the seller is very realistic on his expectations, fully expecting that the car is going to sell," Kraman explained.
