Chile: Nurse plays violin for ICU patients amid COVID pandemic in Santiago

Damaris Silva, a nurse at El Pino hospital in Santiago, has been playing the violin for patients in the Critical Care Unit (CPU) in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

The 26 year old nurse could be seen walking through the corridors of the health centre on Tuesday, while playing the violin for the hospitalised patients, most of whom are infected with COVID-19.

"Communication with patients is only through the eyes, through the glass. So, even though there is no communication between us, the look is a way to be able to connect, a way to be able to interact with each other," explained Silva.

In addition to her usual work assisting patients as a nurse in the hospital, every Tuesday and Thursday at the end of her shift, Silva brings forth music from the strings on her violin to soothe both patients and colleagues exhausted from work, in the midst of the pandemic, with her music.

"Her music gives us strength, transmits kindness, gives us every day, lifts our spirits and supports not only the clinical team but also our patients in a very relevant way," said Natalia Gil, doctor at the Critical Care Unit (CPU).

Silva says the positive response from both family members and discharged patients motivated her to continue playing the violin in the hospital.

"I have received many messages from family members, from patients who have been discharged, thanking me, many who have said, 'it's very nice what you do', others who have said 'I felt down, I felt bad and you passed and I felt the presence of God in my life', I have been told a lot. And that's something beautiful, something that fills me and motivates me to keep doing it.”

Chile is one of the Latin American countries most affected by the pandemic, only surpassed by Brazil and Peru. To date, it has recorded more than 301,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 6,434 related deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
