Iran: Tehranis react as masks become compulsory in public

Iran, Islamic Republic of, Tehran

Tehranis shared their thoughts on Sunday as masks became mandatory in enclosed public spaces under new rules instituted due to the coronavirus outbreak.

People who don't obey the new rules will not be allowed to use public transport and employers have been instructed to send home workers for not wearing a mask in the workplace.

Tehran Municipality's Deputy Director for Transportation and City Traffic Department Seyed Manaf Hashemi explained the actions his department is taking to enforce the rules.

"If citizens don't use masks, we won't let them in the subway. Furthermore, the metro police are also stationed there. At our BRT terminals, we have deployed our executive forces. Naturally, we won't allow those who do not have a mask to get on the bus," he said.

One local commented that the mask requirement "should have been given sooner" due to the number of deaths from the coronavirus, while another dubbed failing to wear a mask a "betrayal."

Iran has suffered the Middle East's worst COVID-19 outbreak with over 240,000 cases, and over 11,000 related deaths reported so far, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
