Germany: Army tests workers at Toennies meat factory as COVID cases jump to 1,029

Coronavirus testing of workers and their relatives continued at a slaughterhouse in Rheda-Wiedenbrueck, in north-western Germany's Guetersloh district, on Saturday as the number of infected rose to 1,029. More than 3,000 workers have been tested so far.

The country's armed forces were deployed to help out carry out the required testing at the location as officials reached their capacity.

Footage shows army officers and soldiers on the company's premises while putting on protective suits.

"Warehouse workers, as well as their relatives, are undergoing tests at the current moment on the premises of the slaughterhouse run by Toennies," said Uwe Kort, Spokesman of Federal Army in North-Rhine Westphalia.

He continued: "13 medical soldiers on the ground have special medical training and are capable of conducting test procedures, meaning taking smears."

Gutersloh County Commissioner Sven Georg said on Thursday that he believes European border openings caused the increase in coronavirus cases at the local meatpacking plant.

The meatpacking plant owned by Toennies as well as local schools and kindergartens have been shut down after an outbreak of coronavirus.

According to reports, the number of people at the plant who have tested positive for the virus has risen to 1,029 since Friday. All 6,500 workers and managers, as well as their families, are under quarantine.
