Lebanon: Hundreds protest currency collapse and economic deterioration in Beirut

Hundreds marched and drove through Beirut on Thursday night, protesting against the collapse of the local currency and the decay in the economic conditions in the country.

Protesters were seen marching in the streets where fires were raging, while riding motorcycles, honking, and chanting slogans criticising the government and calling for an improvement in living conditions. People chanted "[Together] Sunni and Shia. Damn the sectarianism," and "[Governor of Lebanese Central Bank] Riad Salameh is a thief."

"Today, we are here to tell them [government and political elite], enough with the [sectarian] quotas and enough with the monopolisation of the [property of the] Lebanese people," said a protester, who added, "the people will not bow. You must go home."

The government has reportedly decided to hold an emergency meeting tomorrow to discuss the issue.

The Lebanese Lira has lost around 70 percent of its value since the protests against the deteriorating living conditions started in October 2019.

Similar demonstrations took place in different parts of Lebanon at the same time, being the most widespread actions happening since the coronavirus lockdown was imposed in March.
